Chlamydia
Syphilis
Gonorrhea

New health statistics from the AIDS Resource Center Wisconsin show that about half of all sexually active people in Milwaukee will get an STD by age 25. In 2017, more than 6,900 people tested positive for chlamydia. Additionally, 2,500 gonorrhea cases and 87 syphilis cases were reported.

These statistics are consistent with CDC estimates: although those in the 15-24 age groups make up only a quarter of the sexually active population, they are responsible for over half of all new STD cases.

The good news is Milwaukee is taking intentional action to combat the spread of disease. At their local community health center, professionals offer free HIV testing, condoms, and education on prevention. They continue to encourage communication and to reduce the stigma surrounding STDs.

Many cities would benefit from such community efforts. These are needed to reduce the spread of disease. Unfortunately, such community health centers and local support aren’t available in every city. But this doesn’t mean testing is any less important. In fact, it increases the individual’s responsibility; everyone has a responsibility to stay up-to-date on testing for STDs.
