STDs and STIs tend to be attributed to younger age groups as a consequence of promiscuous or risky sexual behavior. Evidence now shows that this is not the case, and there’s another at-risk age group that is often brushed aside.
Perhaps surprisingly, older Americans (aged 55 and older) are less likely than younger age groups to use condoms or take other precautionary measures during sex. As a result, this age group has experienced the greatest jump in confirmed cases of syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea, compared to all other age groups.
Additionally, the lack of safe sex practices puts older Americans at a higher risk for contracting other STDs, such as HIV and herpes. 17% of newly-diagnosed HIV cases in 2017 were for those 55 or older. Many of these were late-stage diagnoses, meaning that significant (and preventable) damage had already been done to major organ systems. Watch this video to learn more:
