Almost everyone is aware of sexually transmitted diseases and infections (STDs and STIs). They’re always in the news with ever-climbing statistics, scary stories of incurable cases, and occasionally some communities experiencing success of controlling the increasing rates.
It’s common to see STD and STI used interchangeably. But is there a difference? If there is, how important is the difference?
Both STDs and STIs are contracted through unprotected sexual or oral intercourse. If you’ve had unprotected sex—especially with a new partner—it’s important to get tested. The CDC recommends getting tested after starting a new sexual relationship, or at least once a year.
Angela Jones, an M.D for Healthy Woman Obstetrics and Gynaecology shares the differences between STDs and STIS:
“You can have an infection, such as chlamydia, without symptoms. Disease simply means that symptoms of said ailment are present and we only describe things as diseases when symptoms are present.”
In other words, an STI is when no symptoms are present. This is often the case with chlamydia and syphilis. On the other hand, an infection is classified as a disease if symptoms are present and considered to be symptomatic.
