STDs can be one of those topics that you hear a lot of scary news about but don’t really know what it is, how it can be transmitted, or if you have symptoms of an STD. So here’s a quick refresher so cover the basics of STDs, and the following video gives more detail:
Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) are bacterial infections transmitted through sexual contact, direct contact with a lesion or sore, exposure to infected blood, vaginal discharge, or semen, and sharing needles.
Most STDs don’t have symptoms, or have common symptoms like nausea or fever that could be attributed to environmental factors. The individual may not know that they have an STD—easily passing it onto their next partner.
- chlamydia
- crabs (pubic lice)
- gonorrhea
- hepatitis B
- herpes
- HIV
- human papillomavirus (HPV)
- molluscum contagiosum
- pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
- scabies
- syphilis
- trichomoniasis
Risk factors for contracting an STD include but are not limited to: unprotected sex, multiple partners, using drugs and/or alcohol while during intercourse, and sharing needles. Individuals can protect themselves from STDs by having a mutually monogamous relationship, using condoms, getting vaccinations, never sharing needles, and undergoing frequent STD testing.
An individual should always be tested for an STD when starting a new sexual relationship, has multiple sex partners, or has symptoms of an STD. The CDC also recommends getting tested annually. Testing can be done through collection of blood, urine, or fluid.
Treatment for STD depends on the STD present, but can include antibiotics, antivirals, and lotions or creams.
If left untreated, STDs can cause severe medical complications, including but not limited to:
- arthritis
- certain cancers
- complications with pregnancy
- death
- infertility
- inflammation of the eye
- heart disease
- pelvic pain
- PID
