There’s a lot of talk about three common STDs: gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis. But one STD that doesn’t get mentioned nearly enough is human papillomavirus (HPV).
HPV is a disease that can be transmitted from one infected person to another via penetrative or oral sexual intercourse. Infection can also be spread through skin-to-skin genital contact.
Most often, HPV is asymptomatic–which means the carrier doesn’t know they have an HPV infection. This is problematic for two reasons:
- The infection can persist in the carrier and cause greater damage, such as cervical, vulvar, vaginal, penile, anal, or oropharyngeal cancers.
- The infection can be unknowingly spread to other sexual partners
If symptoms are present, HPV can cause bumps or warts in the genital region.
HPV is the only STD that can be prevented with a vaccine. Adolescents as young as 11 can receive the vaccine, but it’s not recommended to get it if you are older than 26. You can also prevent HPV by using condoms.
Unlike other STDs cured with antibiotics, you cannot cure an HPV infection; you can only monitor your genital areas and treat precancerous cells. Laser therapy or surgery on genital warts is another preventative treatment.
