Chlamydia
Syphilis
Gonorrhea

The Center for Disease Control recently released preliminary data for sexually transmitted diseases in 2021. Their findings shouldn’t surprise us: STD rates are climbing with no indications of slowing down.

The COVID-19 pandemic has thrown a wrench into accurate STD testing figures. Not only have Americans been less likely to test to avoid contracting an illness at a doctor’s office, but STD testing supplies were rerouted to COVID-19 testing and testing centers. Anyone looking to get an STD test had to work hard to get one.

But despite the obstacles to determining STD incidence, official reports show that at least 2.5 million reported cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis in the U.S. in 2021.

“It is imperative that we… work to rebuild, innovate, and expand [STD] prevention in the U.S.,” said Leandro Mena, director of the CDC’s Division of STD Prevention. David Harvey, executive director of the National Coalition of STD Directors, called the problem “out of control.”

Now that STD testing and testing centers have re-opened and normalized, STD testing is accessible and affordable again. The best way to slow the spread of disease and protect yourself is testing regularly.
