Most people assume that STDs are most prevalent amongst adolescents and and young adults. While STDs are more common in younger age groups, this doesn’t mean that other age groups have no STDs.

In fact, STD rates have been climbing for the past seven years in those 65 years and older. Most specifically, gonorrhea rates about doubled between 2015 and 2019.

Unfortunately, seniors are specifically uncomfortable with talking about STDs or getting tested. Since many STDs have mild symptoms–if any at all–it’s easy to pass off abdominal discomfort or painful urination as poor digestion or a UTI.

It’s also possible that seniors may not be aware of the risk of STDs at their age, or not know the CDC’s current recommendation for a testing schedule.

”We have patients in their 70s, 80s, positive for syphilis…there’s actually been an increase in STIs in nursing homes as well. For a number of reasons, 1. They’re healthier 2. Meds for erectile dysfunction 3. No one is talking about STIs in those above the age of 65-70-75,” said Vasquez.

No matter your age, if you are sexually active, it’s best to use safe sex practices and regularly get tested for STDs.
