Although there is still a stigma surrounding STDs, the perception surrounding them is changing. Instead of fearing STDs and avoiding individuals with them, STDs are now seen as a nuisance.
While it’s true that most STDs can be treated with antibiotics and long-term side effects can be minimized, this doesn’t mean it’s possible to cure all STDs. In fact, there are five STDs that are incurable–if you contract one of these STDs, you’ll live with it for the rest of your life.
Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)
HIV is a virus that attacks your immune system. It makes you more susceptible to infection and harder to recover from illness. This can not only inhibit your daily life by causing you to be sick more often, but it can also be deadly if your body can’t mount an adequate immune response.
Left untreated or poorly treated, HIV progresses to AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome), which has even greater risks.
Although there are many medications that can help contain HIV and minimize side effects, there is still no cure for HIV.
Hepatitis
Hepatitis B and C can cause liver inflammation and cirrhosis. These can eventually lead to liver cancer and hepatocellular carcinoma.
Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV)
This STD can be spread through many means, one of which is through sexual contact. Painful blisters can appear in the genital region or on the lips. HSV lies dormant and blisters will recur throughout your lifetime.
Zika Virus
Though most commonly spread via mosquito bites, Zika can also be transferred sexually. Zika causes congenital deformities if contracted during pregnancy.
Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
Although HPV primarily affects women, men can also contract this disease and spread it to other partners. HPV can alter the cervical mucosa and later cause cervical cancer in women.
Don’t take any risks when it comes to your sexual health! Use safe sex practices and get tested every few months to avoid long-term side effects.
