Condoms have historically been promoted and accepted as the best way to stop the transmission of STDs. But now, men dismiss and even scoff at the use of condoms. Health officials are now forced to treat the rise in STDs as condom use plummets.

Condom use is down, specifically among men having sex with men. This results in higher rates of STDs amongst this group.

Studies have been tracking the downward trend of condoms. In 2011, condoms were the top contraceptive tool for men–75% of men used a condom. But just ten years later, condom use is down to 42%.

“Historically, young people, when they’ve used condoms, have largely been scared into using them by the threat of HIV or an unintended pregnancy,” said David Harvey, executive director of the National Coalition of STD Directors. “They have more options now to prevent those things.”

Today, daily pills and injectable medication are the trendy way to prevent STDs like HIV or unwanted pregnancy. However, this still leaves these individuals susceptible to other STDs like syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea. 

Further, the mindset of STDs has changed from a serious disease to a nuisance that can be treated with antibiotics. While STDs aren’t something to fear and can oftentimes be treated, they are not to be taken lightly. Untreated STDs can cause permanent reproductive or organ damage.

Everyone should take their STD status seriously by:

  • Using condoms during sex–every time, even during foreplay
  • Get tested often–at least every three months or after having sex with a new partner
  • Get treated–if you test positive for an STD or STI, get treated right away!
