Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a virus that attacks the immune system. A damaged and deficient immune system leaves you more susceptible to infections of every kind, from the common cold to COVID-19 to cancer. Your recovery time is longer, and the risk of long-term effects increases.
If left untreated or poorly managed, HIV progresses to AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome).
How Is HIV Spread?
HIV is spread by exchange of bodily fluids of someone infected with HIV. Unprotected sex and sharing of injectible needles are the most common ways HIV is spread.
What Are the Symptoms of HIV?
About two to four weeks after contracting the virus, the following flu-like symptoms appear:
- Fever
- Chills
- Rash
- Night sweats
- Muscle aches
- Sore throat
- Fatigue
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Mouth ulcers
These symptoms do not mean you have HIV, but if you think you’ve been exposed to HIV, it’s best to get tested right away.
Is There a Cure for HIV?
While there are many medications that can manage symptoms and lower the chance of spreading HIV, there is no cure for HIV. If you contract HIV, you will have the virus for the rest of your life.
