Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are infectious bacteria or viruses that are spread through genital contact. Since men and women have different reproductive organs, they will have varying infectious symptoms.
What are the symptoms of STDs or STIs in men? Below are three common STDs and how they present in men.
Gonorrhea
Gonorrhea is a bacterial infection that can be transmitted via vaginal, anal, or oral sex and can affect the throat, anus, and urethra. It’s challenging to know you have gonorrhea because it is often asymptomatic. If symptoms are present, men can have pain with urination and penile discharge that is green, yellow, or white.
Chlamydia
Chlamydia is the most common STD in the United States. Most people with a chlamydia infection won’t display symptoms at all, or symptoms may surface after several weeks. Symptoms of chlamydia in men include:
- Penile discharge
- Painful urination
- Swollen testicles
- Pain, discharge, or bleeding from the rectum
Genital Herpes
Herpes is puss-filled blisters that appear in the genital region two days to two weeks after transmission. The first outbreak is usually the worst. After the blisters resolve, the virus lies dormant and appears later. Symptoms of genital herpes in men include:
- Blisters in the genital or rectal regions
- Blisters in or around the mouth
- Itching or burning where the blisters will appear
- Aching muscles and joints in the lower body
- Swollen lymph nodes in the groin
- Fever
