Texas has the 2nd highest repeat teen birthrate in the nation.

A 2015 health study has found an alarming rise in El Paso County of sexually transmitted diseases. The report, conducted by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, shows that chlamydia cases in the county far exceed statewide and national rates.

Texas joins many of the Southern States in suffering from a disproportionaly increased rate of STDs, HIV and Teen Pregnancy. The birthrate among teens in Texas is the 3rd highest in the nation, with repeat teen birthrates being the 2nd highest.

In El Paso, the Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation revealed in a report that 600 new chlamydia cases had been recorded for every 100,000 people in 2013, which is far above the state average of 488 per 100,000.

Experts attribute part of this problem to the inadequacies of the abstinence-only education that’s taught in most Texas public schools. Abstaining from sexual contact until marriage remains the absolute best way to ensure you don’t become infected with an STD or HIV, but many high school students do not choose to abstain. In one study, 45.9% of Texas high school students said they had engaged in sexual intercourse, with 47.1% of those students admitting they had not used a condom during their last encounter.
