Texas ranks 16th in rates of syphilis among all 50 states.

Texas checked in at No. 11 on the list of states with the highest rates of reported STDs in 2013, according to new data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The state as a whole is #3 among all 50 states with the number of HIV diagnoses in 2015, with the total new cases numbering 4,476. This hits particularly hard in Dallas, where in 2014 the Dallas County Health Department failed to properly notify 209 adult cases and 139 pediatric cases that they may have been exposed to HIV.

“It’s extremely troubling if it occurred as laid out,” said Kirk Myers, who runs a nonprofit that offers HIV testing in neighborhoods with the highest infection rates. “We see a lot of people that are impacted by HIV daily, and so we need all of the resources in Dallas County we can get to respond to this epidemic appropriately.”
