Indianapolis has the 11th Highest overall STD Infection rate in the U.S.

Sexually transmitted diseases are not the most comfortable topic, but according to new numbers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it’s a conversation you must have with sexual partners. Gonorrhea, Chlamydia and Syphilis cases have reached a 25 year high, with seemingly no end in sight. And the diseases don’t discriminate.

“Anyone that’s sexually active. It doesn’t matter how much money they make, what they do for a living, or whether they think they’re in a monogamous relationship. Every sexually active person is at risk for an STD,” said Dr. Cherrell Triplett of Southside ObGyn.

Indiana also had one of the largest HIV outbreaks of recent years, with almost 200 cases reported in Scott County by the time it was finally under control. The cause of the outbreak was sharing needles for injecting drugs, and unlike urban residents, the rural users in Scott County may not have been educated on the risks associated with sharing needles.

Communicating these messages to the people of Scott County has been a key part of the response to the HIV outbreak, along with providing immunizations, substance abuse and job counseling and other services to area residents. Local officials also instituted a temporary needle exchange program, made legal by Indiana Gov. Mike Pence’s public health emergency order.
